Understanding Palliative Care

Palliative care is active, compassionate care for individuals and their families who are living with a life-threatening illness that is usually at an advanced stage. Palliative Caregivers help terminally ill individuals live out their remaining time in comfort and dignity. The aim of Palliative Care is to enhance quality of life when a cure is no longer an option. This care is accomplished through a team of caregivers, guided by the client and can include: family members, caregivers, volunteers, community services personnel, health professionals and physicians.

Palliative Care Warmhearts

Our team of Warmhearts volunteers are the strength of the Palliative Caregivers Sudbury/Manitoulin. Backed by a committed staff, Warmhearts volunteers meet not only physical needs but also the psychological, social, cultural, emotional and spiritual needs of each client and family. We seek to uphold a person’s dignity by providing a comforting presence of friendship, caring and hope for the person living with the illness as well as the best quality of life for both this person and his or her family. Our Warmhearts caregivers are thoroughly screened, trained, and supported in their care for the terminally ill.

How do we help?

When a cure is no longer possible, Palliative Caregivers provide compassionate care in
the form of:

  • Companionship and compassionate bedside support;
  • Caregiver respite;
  • Bereavement support;
  • Compassion, caring and empathy, wherever needed.
  • We provide supportive care to children faced with terminal illness, grief, or bereavement.
  • We provide hospice palliative care training to volunteers, health care providers, and students.

Who do we assist?

Palliative Caregivers of Sudbury/Manitoulin support individuals and families who are facing a life threatening illness with a prognosis of one year or less.

Informal Caregiver Support Program

Informal caregiving at the end of life can involve transition to a new health care team and a new set of services as the care focus changes to comfort rather than cure. Informal caregivers need information in order to deal with new realities and make informed decisions. Palliative Caregivers, Sudbury/Manitoulin , through this program aims to better meet the need of the dying individual. To do this we must first meet the need of the informal caregiver. Through empowering and supporting the informal caregiver in their role we aim to alleviate potential burnout and in return improve the quality of life of both the individual dying and their loved ones. For more information on this service, call 677-0077.

Wherever and whenever you need us
